IPTV buffering: why it happens and how to fix it

Buffering means your device is not receiving video data as fast as it plays it. Most of the time the cause is in the home network, and most fixes take a few minutes. Work through this list from top to bottom.

First, find out where the problem is

  • Does it happen on every channel, or only one? A single channel can have a temporary issue at the source; try again later or tell our support.
  • Does it happen on every device? If your phone plays smoothly but the TV does not, the TV's connection or app is the likely cause.
  • Does it happen at certain times? Buffering mostly in the evening points to a busy home network or internet provider congestion.

Stability matters more than speed

A 100 Mbps connection that drops out for a second every few minutes will buffer more than a steady 30 Mbps line. Speed tests show the peak, not the dips. Run a test on the device you watch on, at the time you usually watch, and repeat it a few times.

Fixes that work most often

  1. Restart the router and the device: unplug both for 30 seconds.
  2. Use a network cable instead of Wi-Fi if you can. This solves the majority of buffering problems.
  3. On Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz network, move the router closer or remove obstacles between them.
  4. Pause large downloads, game updates and cloud backups on other devices while you watch.
  5. Close other apps on the streaming device and clear the player app's cache if it offers that option.
  6. In the player settings, try a different video player engine or a larger buffer size if available.

If your device is the bottleneck

Older Smart TVs and budget boxes can struggle to decode high-bitrate 4K or large channel lists. If buffering only happens on one older device, choose the HD version of a channel where available, or move to a faster streaming device.
